“God Bless America”

Traveling outside the United States has deepened my appreciation for this privileged country. I have been to Canada, England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Egypt, Venezuela, and Russia eight times. None compare to the United States when it comes to standard of living, freedom and opportunity. I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude, especially at this time of year. My gratefulness focuses on two groups of people who paid the price for what we tend to take for granted: those who founded this free country and those who fight to keep it free for us to enjoy.

U.S. founding documents are masterpieces and remain as models for democracy. Forged by tension they form a balanced framework for authority and autonomy, nationalism and individualism, freedom and responsibility. Whatever problems we have in the U.S. pale in comparison to desperate situations that plague much of the world. Every time I re-enter this land I love, I say to myself, “This country got it right from the beginning. It’s a work of art; an act of God.”

Unfortunately our freedom has to be protected from factions and forces that would like to destroy this work of art and act of God. We are fortunate there are men and women who are willing to fight, and if necessary, lay down their lives for us and future generations.

On behalf of the ATS family and friends I would like to thank those among us who have trained in the armed forces, fought in recent wars, and in some cases continue to face the conflicts of our times.
