HAROLD E. ANDERSON
Harold Anderson was born on September 2, 1916 to Elmer and Mabel (Lindgren) Anderson, in Cokato, Minnesota. He made his decision for Christ in 1931, and was baptized in Lake Mille Lacs in 1932. He drove truck for his father and Cold Spring Granite. He married Jeanette Isaacson January 15, 1944, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Harold served as a Captain in the United States Air Corp during World War II, completing 29 missions as a B24 bomber pilot. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Upon returning from the war, Harold managed the truck fleet at Cold Spring Granite, and subsequently founded Anderson Trucking Service, Inc. in 1955. Under Harold's leadership, ATS grew into five distinct businesses; ATS Specialized, ATS Inc., Warren Transport of Waterloo, Iowa, ATS Logistics and Intermodal Caribbean Express (ICE). Additionally, Harold was owner/founder of a number of additional businesses which include St. Cloud Truck Sales and Midwest Canvas of St. Cloud, Minnesota, SunBelt Furniture Xpress of Hickory, North Carolina and X-L Specialized Trailers of Oelwein, Iowa.
Harold was active in numerous transportation organizations, serving in such capacities as Vice President at Large for the American Trucking Association. He served on the Board of Directors for the Truckload Carriers Conference, the Specialized Carriers and Riggers Association, Minnesota Trucking Association, Central Minnesota Transportation Alliance, ATA Litigation Center, St. Cloud Airport Advisory Board, St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way of St. Cloud. He was a former Mayor of Isle, Minnesota. Harold was an active member at Calvary Baptist Church in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and served as a Bethel Foundation Member at Bethel College and Seminary as well as on the President's Council at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He was Honorary Chairman of the St. Cloud Area Salvation Army Expansion Campaign and was founder of the Harold E. Anderson Entrepreneurial Center at St. Cloud State University.
Harold received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1998, he was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Minnesota and the Dakotas and was recipient of the 1998 St. Cloud Area Entrepreneurial Success Award. He received a number of awards including the Bethel College and Seminary "Arnold T. Wicklund Award", the Minnesota Trucking Association President's Award, the American Truck Historical Society Founder's Award, the American Trucking Association Fifty Year Award, St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce Chairperson's Award, and the Truckload Carrier's Association Past Chairmen's Award, the MTA Lifetime Achievement Award and the Minnesota Transportation Advocates Award from the Minnesota Transportation Alliance.
Harold is survived by wife, Jeanette, sons and daughter and their spouses, Rollie (Barbara) Anderson, St. Cloud, MN, James (Lois) Anderson of Overland Park, KS, Barbara Anderson (Dave Chandler) of St. Cloud, MN, Grandchildren, Julie (Todd) Edinger of Andover, MN, Brent (Ingrid) Anderson of Jacksonville, FL, Scott (Myndee) Anderson of St. Joseph, MN, Nathan Anderson of Overland Park, KS, Adam and Brian Fanslau of St. Cloud, MN, Great Grandchildren, Erin and Laura Edinger of Andover, MN, and his sister, Annette Elliason of Isle, Minnesota, and many colleagues, friends and employees. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant daughter, Connie Jean.
Harold was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a respected business leader. His leadership, strength and humor will be missed by many. |
