QUAL COMM SAFETY REMINDER
As a reminder to drivers, satellite communication devices should not be used unless the tractor/trailer is in a safe, parked position. We have had reports of drivers using their Qual-Comm units while driving. This presents a safety hazard for the motoring public as well as for ATS. Please pull over to a safe, parked position prior to using Qual Comm.

WINTER DRIVING REMINDER
As winter quickly comes upon us, it never hurts to have a reminder of the hazards winter driving presents to us all. You will face times of reduced visibility and traction this season, so here are a few reminders to prepare you for your first encounter this year.

- Reduce speed and following distance. Increase stopping distance 4 to 10 times than on dry pavement
- Drive defensively and be prepared
- Avoid sudden changes in braking, acceleration, and steering
- Know the weather before you hit the road
- Keep your wipers, mirrors, and lights clean
- Plan ahead and allow plenty of time
- Stop or delay your trip when necessary

Please remember that driving too fast for conditions is typically the reason for all weather related accidents. Be safe and cautious this winter, don’t let winter get the best of you!

SAFETY TIP - BE CAREFUL WHEN JUMP STARTING A CAR
It is getting to be that time of year again, and jump-starting a vehicle can be very dangerous both to the person doing it and to the vehicle. Before touching a dead battery, first read the owner’s manual for the car because some directions are unusual. Jump-starting improperly can cause surges of electricity through the vehicle’s entire electrical system.

When working with a battery, wear splash-proof goggles. If the battery explodes, eye protection can prevent injuries from flying fragments or chemicals.

Here’s how to attach the cables:
1. Connect one positive cable (+ or red) to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
2. Clamp the remaining positive cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
3. Clamp the negative cable ( - or black) to the negative terminal of the good battery.
4. Make the last connection by clamping the black or negative cable on the engine block (not on the negative post of the dead battery) of the stalled vehicle.

Now you are ready. Start the car with the good battery and then the disabled car. When finished, remove cables in reverse order.

ATS PURCHASES NEW MAIN FRAME COMPUTER
ATS recently took delivery on a new IBM p Series computer. This computer is an upgrade to support redundancy or fail-over for our primary main frame. In non-computer language, this means that if failure in primary computer occurs, this machine will take over the functions that the primary main frame performs for operations and finance. According to Lee Justin, Director of IS, this machine will “support growing business needs and improve reliability”.
