Overweight permits allow carriers to transport heavy loads from place to place. If a load exceeds height, length, width and weight standards, overweight and oversize permits are typically required. For example, most states require overweight permits for loads that weigh more than 80,000 pounds. As far as height, width and length are concerned, oversize permits are typically necessary for loads that are higher than 13 feet, 6 inches, wider than 8 feet, 6 inches and longer than 80 inches.
ATS Specialized has long experience with transporting oversized loads. The following are some of the types of loads we've transported:
Cranes
Construction tractors
Turbines
Buildings
Generators
Wind Tower Components
Overweight Permits
States, rather than the federal government, have the responsibility for regulating and distributing oversize trucking permits. Before traveling on a state's highways, a heavy load transporter must seek oversize/overweight permits. In determining which loads require permits, states usually consider not only weight, but also the amount of weight in relation to the number of axles.
