ATS Specialized FAQ

What freight types does ATS Specialized have experience moving?

ATS Specialized has years of experience hauling heavy equipment and oversized freight for a variety of industries and project types, including:

  • Aerospace and defense
  • Agriculture and forestry
  • Construction
  • Energy and utility
  • Data centers
  • Infrastructure
  • Manufacturing and industrial equipment
  • Mining
How does ATS Specialized vet and train drivers for heavy haul?

We require a minimum of 6 years of verifiable over-the-road (OTR) experience and a minimum of 2 years of verifiable over-dimensional/OSOW experience to qualify as a heavy haul driver for ATS Specialized. Once hired, drivers must complete regular training, maintain a safe driving record, and remain in compliance with all DOT requirements.

Can ATS help me with permitting, route planning, and other compliance requirements?

Yes! ATS's in-house teams will handle oversize/overweight load permits, route planning and surveying, arranging pilot car and escort car services, and other safety and compliance-related needs on your behalf.

How far in advance should I plan a heavy haul shipment?

As early as possible. Heavy haul shipments require significant planning long before the shipment moves. Permits, route surveys, site reviews, and pilot car coordination can take weeks, or even months, to arrange.

If you know you need to move an oversized shipment, involving an experienced heavy haul transportation provider early gives them more time to review the details and build a stronger transportation plan.

This is especially important for large-scale projects, such as data center builds, energy projects, or industrial expansions, where oversized freight may need to align with construction schedules, site access requirements, or phased delivery plans.

What classifies as a heavy haul shipment?

While heavy haul dimensions can vary between carriers, ATS typically defines heavy haul as freight that exceeds one or more of the following:

  • Height: 14 feet, 6 inches
  • Width: 14 feet, 6 inches
  • Length: 100 feet
  • Weight: 55,000 pounds

If your shipment exceeds any of these limits, heavy haul transportation may be required. An ATS Specialized expert can review your freight details and help determine the right transportation approach.
