ATS recently managed the transportation of a restored Civil War artifact, from the North Carolina Transportation Museum to the Atlanta History Center, which is located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia’s Buckhead district.
The restored 1856 locomotive, known as Texas, is a remnant of Atlanta’s early railroad era and well-known for its important role in the Civil War. In 1862, the Texas was involved in The Great Locomotive Chase, a raid by Union soldiers in northern Georgia which sought to damage the Western and Atlantic Railroad that linked Chattanooga, TN with Atlanta, GA. The Texas was the locomotive used by Confederate forces to halt the Union effort.
The train engine stretches 26 feet, not including the cow catcher mounted on the on front. It stands at 12-feet-4 inches to the top of the steam dome, is 8-feet-2 inches wide and weighs 53,000 pounds. The locomotive’s restored tender or coal car was also hauled as part of the project. Its dimensions measured 19-feet-2-inches long, 7-feet-8-inches tall, 8-feet-6-inches wide, with a weight of 20,000 pounds. Jackson McQuigg, Vice President of Properties for the History Center realized the strict attention to detail that was required for a safe and successful delivery of these historical pieces. He once again turned to ATS, who had recently moved a priceless national artifact, the “Battle of Atlanta” Cyclorama painting to the Atlanta History Center for him. Siting ATS’ genuine interest, great equipment and experienced drivers, McQuigg provided praise for ATS. “Y’all did a great job and we are grateful to the drivers for their skilled driving and patience. ATS has been a key part of the Cyclorama project and we are so pleased with your work.”
Two tractor-trailers were required to move the specialized freight. The Texas was secured on a 2-axle removable goose neck trailer, commonly known as a lowboy. Due to the engine’s height, this specific trailer allowed for ease in loading and better clearance while being transported. The tender’s dimensions allowed for it to be placed on a 2-axle drop deck trailer for shipment. The preparation and shipment of the locomotive took three days. Both the engine and tender arrived safely at the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building at the Atlanta History Center where it will be housed during its 75-year license agreement with the city of Atlanta.
